FOOD RIOTS IN ITALY.
A sad sign of the pio?ailing distress in Italy was the late outbreak of the peasant population of Acerra, Dear Naples. The torrents of rain which had fallen had prevented work in the field, and the general misery among the labourers had increased. The people out of work were standing about, when a boy passed the octroi officers with an asa laden with bran, and as bran has to pay duty the officials arrested the lad for trying to smuggle in the bran. The boy prjtested loudly, and the unoccupied operatives took bis part: they liberated the boy and carried him about the streets. Cries of " Down with the octroi" were heard, and very soon a mob attacked the office and burnt it down, and other mobs burnt all the excise oilices round the town. Thoy fchsn attacked the central office in the square, burned all the registers and furniture, and attempted to force the strong box. By this time the rioters numbered many thousands. The town hall and schools were sacked. The ommunal library was also burnt. Some Roldiers from Caserta and Nola at last put an end to the disturbance.
