THE DESERT BLOOMING AS THE ROSE.

What artesian water is doing for Australia may be judged from the following letter addressed by Mr W. O. Cox, CO., to the Queenslander—- ' In November last you published my' telegram from Boatman Station, St. George, stating that a 4,000,000 gallon iiow oi fresh water had justbeen _ struck on that station by Mr J. L/Wbodley, contractor, at a depth of 1,500 ft. Mr Woodley has now contracted tu put down another bore on Boatman back country. The grand results ho secured by the first bore have encouraged the lessee to again endeavour to tap tho artesian stream. Should No •! bore prove a success, and the flow be at all in volume anythingapproaching tu that obtained by the No 1, it will bo possible, and it is proposed, by means of a bbnd creek and its ramifications, to water about 400 square miles of what is at present unavailable country, and which will increase tho carrying capacity of the nm by 100.000 sheep. One half of tho vast stream from No I has filled eleven dams on the Nobino, and tho creek also for a distance of twenty miles to the station boundary, and tho other half has been carried'by drains for thirty miles back. The drains are 4ft wide and Din deep, smd are to be further extended. The sheep water at them without diffiexdty. This system waters eight paddocks in what was dry country. It is the intention *°.excavatot [ •: ' ; . conserve the water, and only turn ihe bore water on when thoy require replenishing.' l
