THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. "This fact I will chronicle." WEDNESDAY, FEB. 20, 1895.
As will be seen by a notice in this issue Mr S. Howard has opened a drapery establishment, next the Catholic Church. The Bishop of Salisbury arrived here on Friday evening last, from Auckland. The Bishop was the guest of the Rev. Mr Spencer. He conducted the two services, morning and evening, at the Church of England on Sunday. His Lordship left on Monday morning for Auckland. We notice that the contractor for the large hotel in the new township has started laying the foundation, and expects to have it finished in the course of a fortnight. Mr Wilson, proprietor of Lake View House, also has commenced with his new boarding house in the Government township, and it is anticipated that it will be completed in about a month.
There will be a Band of Hope meeting on Friday evening in the Schoolroom. We hope to see a good attendance, as the ladies and gentlemen in connection with it have prepared an excellent programme. All are invited. We have to record the sad and sudden death of Dennis Sheahan. He broke a blood-vessel on Saturday afternoon about 4.30, and expired a fow minutes after. He was about 40 years of age. Mr Malfroy, coroner, held the inquest in the Rotorua Hotel, on Sunday morning, when a verdict of 'Death from natural causes in accordance with medical evidence,' was returned. The funeral took place the following day. The Courthouse has been passed by Mr Vickerman, the engineer, and we understand the contractor's, Mr Holman of Auckland, work has given every satisfaction.
The Government have further extended their recreation grounds by throwing open the large section situated between the Sanatorium and tho Post Ofis.ee,
All the local timber mills are busy supplying material for the various buildings being erected. Miss Amy Vaughan's Amazons performed here for several nights last week to large and appreciative audiences. The company left on Monday morning for Tauranga. Mr P. Lake has decided to at once complete his new bakery. Mr J. Hadley, Mr McRae's gardener, notifies that he has onions for sale in any quantity from 141bs to a ton. The Maoris made a very good thing out of the Race course gates last Wednesday, having taken £54 at tho gates. They also took over the coaches running between the town and the race course, for which they gave £4 10s, and made from this source £11 15 9d, leaving them a profit altogether of £27 5s 9d.
Attention is directed to an advertisement in another column, that a secondhand double-seated buggy, horse and harness is for sale cheap, the owner having no further use for it. Mr J. H. Taylor, auctioneer, has received instructions from Mr Bussy, who is leaving the district, to sell by auction all his household furniture, &c., on Saturday next. Mr Robinson, Tarawera House, also is about having alterations to his premises.
