£6,000,000 A DAY
COST OF WAR TO BRITAIN SAVE TO LEND TO GOVERNMENT By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Thursday, 8.10 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 23. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon), broadcasting, said the war was costing the country at least £6,000,000 daily. Increased taxation would not pay more than half the amount being expended this year, for which reason it would be necessary to borrow. Sir John Simon stressed the need of saving every penny in order to lend it to the Government. He added that avoidable spending would help to raise prices unnecssarily. With the goodwill of the people he was confident a great contribution for war purposes would be secured. Mr. Chamberlain, speaking at a private dinner of his supporters, said the British fighting services in every theatre of the war were assuming enormous dimensions. Britain and her Allies were now in a position to meet any eventuality. Victory would reward this common unexampled effort.
