OBITUARY

MRS. J. McTAGGART A very old and highly respected resident of the district passed away at her late residence, York Street West, Levin, on Saturday afternoon, in the person of Mrs. Josephine Elizabeth McTaggart, at the age of 78 years. The late Mrs. McTaggart was born in Melbourne, Australia, and came to NeV •' Zealand with her parents at a very' early age. After living for some time in the Hutt district she came to Levin. About 50 years ago, in company with her husband, George Kemp, who predeceased her 45 years ago. In 1896 she married James McTaggart, who passed away in 1937. Both the late Mr. and Mrs. McTaggart were actively interested in temperance work in the district and were closely associated with this work in the old Temperance Hall, which was on the corner of Salisbury and Queen Street. The late Mrs. McTaggart was also keenly interested, up to a few years ago, in the work of the local Fire Brigade ana Presbyterian Church.

The deceased lady is survived by one son, George Kemp (America) and two daughters —Mrs. F. Johnston (Sydney) and Mrs. A. A. Jenkins (Otaki)—of the first marriage, and by two daughters— Mrs. M. Clarke (Wellington) and Mrs. E. Judd (Levin) —of the later marriage, and to these the sympathy of a large number of friends will be extended. MRS. M. J. MUDGWAY Another of the fast disappearing band of pioneers passed away at her residence, Salisbury Street, Levin, on Saturday afternoon, in the person of Martha Jane Mudgway, relict of the late William Mudgway, at the advanced age of 77 years. The late Mrs. Mudgway was born in Wellington in 1562 and as a young woman settled in the Poroutawhao district about 55 years ago. Together with her late husband she came to live in Levin some 43 years ago when Levin was little more than standing bush and proved herself a worthy pioneer. The deceased lady took little interest in public affairs, being too busily engaged as so many of the pioneers were in building a home and its amenities, to devote much time to outside interests. Nine sons—Messrs William, AI bert, Sydney, James (all of Levin), Harold, Laurie, Charles (Auckland), Arthur (Masterton) and Thomas (Te Kuiti) —and two daughters—Mrs. G. R. Lester and Mrs. G. Raymond (Levin) are left to mourn the, passing of their mother. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grand-children, and to all of these the sympathy of the community will be extended. The interment takes place at Levin to-morrow.
