Stressing the effectiveness of air bombing, Marshal Valle introducing the Air Bfirf'iniates i* l ie Senate, referred to the lessons of the “two wars which our aviation recently won.” He said if Valencia, Barcelona and' the centre of Madrid were still intact it was only because General Franco wished to spare them, but the harbour quarters of Barcelona and \ aleneia today 'showed how an inhabited area could be reduced to a heap of ruins where it was impossible for life'of any kind to exist. Air action against ships had been equally effective, 162 having been sunk or damaged in the harbours of Eastern Spain.
