MOTOR REGISTRATIONS SET NEW RECORD
#. USUAL LAST-MINUTE RUSH. As was anticipated, the annual reregistration of motor vehicles reached record figures in Levin this year. Including all types of vehicles, the total number registered at the close of business yesterday, was 1006, as compared with 915 last year and 894 in 1937. To deal with this part of its operations, the Levin Post Office opened a special branch in the 'building formerly occupied by the Public Trust, and three officers —Messrs B. M. Armstrong, F. G. Thomson and E. W. Bott—were assigned to the work. Business was steady throughout the month, and culminated in the usual last-minute rush on Tuesday and yesterday. Of the aggregate of 1006 registrations, 120 were made on Tuesday, 25 before mid-day yesterday and 115 during the afternoon. The various types of vehicles registered were as ifollowi:-—Private cars 727, motor cycles 20, rental cars 3, trucks and trade motors (L plates) 125, exemption all classes 26, dealers’ cars plates) 5, trailers 17, lorries and heavy trucks 64, Government vehicles 7, omnibuses 2, taxis 5 and passenger buses for the carriage of school children 5. The Horowhenua County Council has issued 1078 motor drivers’ licenses and 312 of these were renewed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Levin Borough Council issued 159 licenses on Tuesday and Wednesday, and an aggregate of 437 so Tar this year. Mr. J. A. Porter, officer of the Automobile Association (Wellington), andhis assistant rendered a much appreciated service to motorists in completing the necessary registration forms and obtaining the new plates for them. In Levin a total ofi 400 reregistrations were handled, 120 of which were completed yesterday.
