THIRD OF KING GEORGE SERIES. PICTORIAL 1-JD. REPLACED. The inauguration of the Empire mail service brings into great prominence the lid. value in postage stamps, because this is the rate for the half-ounce letter to Empire countries served by the

seVeme. The Post Office is issuing a new I'd. stamp, the third of the King George scries. It will be available to the public, on July 2(lth. Printed by the intaglio line-engraving process in a rich chocolate brown, the new stamp presents a full-face portrait of His Majesty King George VI., wearing the uniform of an Admiral of the Elect. The reproduction is distinctive and contains such details as the chain of the Royal Victorian Order and the Sovereign’s badge of the Order of the Hath, which is pendant from the collar.

The portrait is surrounded by a border of Maori spiral design, drawn by Mr. W. <T. Pooch, of Wellington. Tins feature is more prominent, than :ti tim lld and (id. King George stamps, as: I more space has been made available | through the obminatiou of one representation of the value, the stamp bearing one inscription at the bottom: “Postage and Revenue. New Zealand, ,Ud.”' It replaces the Rotorua cooking scene in the pictorial series, which will be withdrawn on .Inly 2oth. The Post Office will not issue special first-day •covers for the new stamp, but where possible, it is prepared to lightly and legibly date-stamp which are soocially handed in at post offices.
