LOCAL HIGH WATER.

JULY TIDE TABLE,

WORK Or THE MONTH. A review of the road work carried cut in the district during the mouth of ! June was given by the, engineer (Mr, iJ. T. M. Brewster) at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Friday. It road as follows ; Tokomaru Hiding: Some of the water table and drains in the TokOmaru township have been cleaned and in .some places the bottom has been raised. In many cases the water courses have scoured at the bottom and the extra depth has made them dangerous. This applies to the drain on the south side of Tokomaru Hoad in the Tokomaru township. It is my intention to raise the bottom of this drain and then pave it with boulders. In company with Cr. Biggins, I made an inspection of the drain in front of the Tokomaru Post Office and it was decided to instal 30 feet of 9-incdi diameter pipes which will I partially overcome the trouble. To make | a complete job would necessitate exI (ending the culvert another 3(1 feet, but it woidd intercept two small branch culverts, one from the post oilice and the other from private property. The grader ims been over most of the district roads. In some cases the machine, on account of persistent ruins, has left an amount of mnd and slurry on the road surface, which will only be cured by a reasonable amount of fine weather. A gang of fifteen men has commenced the building of filling approaches to No. 3 bridge on Kingston Road. It is hoped to have the new bridge completed at an early date and then the new fill trill lie brought into immediate use. it was necessary to move the old bridge to the side of (lie road reserve to allow traffic to pass while (lie new works are being carried out. A gang of 15 men made a, si art this week with the deviation at (ho west end of Albert Road. Vriieu this job is completed an easier grade and belter alignment will result. It is now proposed to adopt the Hue as requested by Mr. J. K. ‘Whyte, late counrilior. to connect with No. (50 Main Pighwav a 1 the council pit, and thus d > away with the very steep grade at. the road junction. All drains on Kara and 01 i Foxton Roads and Stout Street have 'men cleaned. The eastern end of Kara Road has boon repaired with metal. Some of the roads in the Tokomaru district are getting evry bare of top metal and it will bo necessary to start the crusher at Tokomaru River at an early date. Metal for light patching on the Makema plains roads will have to be taken from the river as sufficient metal was not delivered to the dump from the Manawatu River before the floods came down.

Wirokino Riding : I have inspected the road frontage at the Kimberley Hall with a view- to providing a parking place for cars. On the Arapaepae Road and south of Kimberley Ron-1 there is an area where a parking place could lie constructed, but before metal is put down it will be necessary to put the road grader over it. Owing to the exceptionally wet state of the ground, the grader cannot do the work, but as 1 soon as the surface dries sufficiently the I work will be carried out. The car parkjing place at Kopntaroa Hall has been | increased to the maximum of parking I area available. The gang of men cmI ployed on Kukutauaki and Lindsay Roads have completed the road widening and when the road surface dries out a vast improvement will result. Also hanks on and near (he railway crossing ■.immediately south of Kopntaroa railI way station have been lowered to give | a view ot,trains approaching the crossing. River protection wort; has been carried out near the eastern end of Florida Road. Willows were cut and anchored along the bank for a distance of approximately two chains. It is hoped that the work will be effective as any protection to this class of riverbank is not always satisfactory as the surrounding country is below flood level. I wrote to the Waitarere_ Domain Hoard in regard to the placing of four | street lights at Waitarcre and an agree-1 ment lias been reached as to where the lights are to be placed. The necessary application to instnl the lights has been made to the Horowhonua Electric Lower Board. Maintenance inetal from (lie crusher at Tararua pit has been put on various roads throughout the dis trict

Otaki Riding : The repairs to No. 1 I I-ridge on Rahui Road have been comj pleted. Recent heavy rains caused a j number of small slips to fall on to RaI hui Road, but in no ease was there excessive damage. The Waitohu Stream overflowed the Valley Road and lifted some of the sealing on the south edge or the road, but not to any great extent. The Waikawa Beach Road has stood up well under wet conditions. The giader was over Convent Road and cut the surface materials heavily and subsequent rains caused the road surface to get into a very greasy state, necessitat-

ing the grader having to be put o\ -r ; the road to remove the slurry. I I e lloro Riding ; Tho grader has been over several roads in the district, including Soldiers’ Road, where a vast improvement was the result. This road is now in first-class -condition. Generally, the roads in this riding are in fair condition. 1 have written to the Waikanae Beach Progressive Association in reference to the placing of street lights, but up to the present 1 have not received a reply.

1 Main Highways :AH main highways under the control of the council have received routine attention. A portion of No. 60 highway, north of Tokomaru and near the Kairanga county boundary, has been ripped up with the scarifier in an endeavour to get an even surface. The contractor has not made any further progress with the work on No. 372

.Vain Highway. No. 373 Main Highway is now in good condition and is almost ready to take a seal coat. The contractor is not making fast progress with his contract on No. oil Main Highway. The report was received. Mr. Long was granted permission to deepen u drain on Kara Road, Shannon.
