BROUGHT UP-TO-DATE.

POWERS OF LOCAL BODIES. By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Last Night. When the House met at 2..J), the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill was reintroduced by Governor’s message and read a first time. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon W. E. Parry, staled, that the Bill was introduced at the end of last session The Minister stressed the importance ..f the Bill to local bodies and said that since its original introduction, it had been circulated to all boroughs, town boards and fire brigades. They had had ample time to consider the provisions of the measure and ho had received the hearty co-operation of all concerned. The Bill contained provisions that had been sought by the Municipal Association conferences and gave local bodies the opportunity of bringing their legislative powers up to modern requirements. To a very large extant the representations of Municipal Association conferences had not been given effect to in the past and delegates got tired of moving the same old remit year after year.

Hon. G. W. Forbes: It still might not be right then. The Minister: I quite agree, but in view of the fact that the whole of the local bodies considered these remits and this Bill, it looks to me as if they may be right now.

lie stated that there were 38 clauses in the measure which contained no fundamental change in principles of locai body government. They were all machinery clauses.
