WICKET STICKY ALTER HEAVY RAIN (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Sunday. 7 p.m. LONDON, July 2. The ground at Sheffield for the match between Yorkshire and the Australian' was saturated by a thunderstorm yesterday and the start was delayed till 11.45 when the weather was cloudy and the wicket sticky. The attendance was 35,000. Australia fielded the following team: Bradman, Fingleton, McCabe, Badcock. Hassett, Barnes, Waite, Barnett, While, McCormick, FJectwood-bnutn. Wart! was twelfth man.

Yorkshire won the toss and sent Australia in. The bowlers found difficulty in obtaining a foothold. Fingleton was uneasy and he escaped a leg before appeal in the first over. He was dropped at fine leg in the second. The wicket quickly cut up and Fingleton succumbed to Smailes in the Jailer’s second over. Bradman, when 12. made a bad stroke and the ball dropped just short of second slip. The conditions kept the batsmen on tenterhooKs.

Badcock was unhappy during his short stay at the crease. Smailes was bowling offspimicrs round the wb-ket and he kept the batsmen on the defensive. Bradman livened up with the arrival of Verity and he reached 27 in an hour. He battled splendidly under adverse conditions, placing with the utmost skill. He had a narrow escape after lunch, but continued to force the pace. He showed delightful footwork. Hassett also played Verity well, hut when 43 !ie narrowly escaped being caught. He readied 50 in a 100 minutes and then commenced to hit out brilliantly. Ho secured fours and sixes freely but went out leg before when attempting a pull. The innings occupied 215 minutes.

Sutcliffe had to retire wdiea a ball from White popped up unexpectedly and struck him on the tight, hand. Waite, bowling slow oftspincers, was successful after a few ovc T s having Hutton well caught, at fine leg. Waite was bowling remarkably well and he took advantage of the wicket.
