. The Prime Minister, Mr. Neville ■ Chamberlain, speaking at a mass meeting at Kettering and referring to the Spanish bombings, said shipowners were getting fourfold and fivefold the ordinary freights. He added that after a warning that we could not protect ships in territorial waters the Government would be betraying its trust if it took action that might involve war. This did not mean condonation of bombings or recognition of the aerial blockade of ports. Mr. Chamberlain added: "It is difficult to "econcile General Franco’s explanations with some of the facts, but perhaps airmen do not always adhere to their instructions.’’ lie said: "I am not going to be diverted from the policy I believe to be right by ill-natured and ill-informed criticism, Out I regret that the Opposition is creating the impression abroad of nations! disunity, I do not believe the country desires "Iho adoption of a challenging and aggressive attitude instead of a peace-seeking one, but if there is no other way of preserving our freedom we wiL fight again. ’ ’
