The Levin Daily Chronicle TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 1938. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Attention is drawn to an attraction for old and young next Saturday night. Under the auspices of the Kimberley Women’s Institute, a chiiuren’s plain and fancy dress dance is being held in the Kimberley Hall. Children will have their fun from 7.30 to 9.30, after which their elders take a share of the evening’s amusement. Good prizes are offered and with a home-made supper and good music, nothing could be desired to provide a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all at a moderate charge.

“The appropriate money to be given as compensation for pain and suffering is hard to assess,” said Mr, Justice Callan in the Supreme Court at Auckland, in summing up to the jury a claim for damages in which pain and suffering were relevant. “It is so hard, ’’ he added, “that frankly I am glad it falls to you and not to me.” Speaking further of the ‘ ‘ value ’ ’ of life in the same connection, he said it was impossible to measure the value accurately. Wise judges had impressed on juries the need to be moderate as between man and man, otherwise so much money would be given as damages that the law governing such claims would lose its value. In that sort of thing, he said, one should not be influenced by,'whether a man was rich or poor, or had a high or low social position. The basis'' ofjudgment was the boon of life itself.

“Anyone oblige with a fill?” lie asked with an ingratiating smile as he entered the club smoke room. “Bully nuisance—left my pouch in mv other coat.” No one “obliged” until a new member passed his pouch along. “Who’s that bloke?” he asked when the “absent-minded beggar” had left the room. “That’s the club cadger,” said somebody, “tons of oof but never (buvs tobacco if he can cadge it. He’ll smoke anything, but his particular weakness is Toasted Cut Ping No. 10.” “Same here.” said the new member with a laugh, “I smoke it because T can’t got anything else so good, but By .Tove, I wish I’d known about that blighter ! I’ve no time for cadgers !” And everybody laughed. Most smokers, as it hap-: penp. haye a “partioular weakness” for “toasted.” Hence the run on all five brands—Cut Plug No. 10 (Bulls--11000), Navy Cut No. .1 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Piverhead Gold and' Desert Gold. They’re not only famous for flavour and bouquet, but owing to being toasted (by the manufacturers’ own exclusive process) are the purest and ’east harmful of all tobaccos.
