POROUTAWHAO INSTITUTE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Poroutawhao Women's Institute took place in the school-room at Poroutawhao recently. There was a fair attendance of ir embers and the proceedings were opened with the "Ode to .Friendship," followed by "Aspirations." Members observed a silence in sympathy with Mrs. Hume, who recently lost her sister, and Mrs. Gibson Young, whose son was tragically killed in England. A new scheme for establishing a junior section came up for consideration, and it was decided to deal fully with the matter at the April meeting. It will commence activities with six juniors, Misses M. and R. Tait, K Webb, E. and A. Spiers and Z. Church. The points prize for the year was won by Mrs. Healy with 33 points, Mrs. Alward was second with 17 and Mrs. E. Taylor third with 14. The report on the year's work was read and adopted, and judging from this interesting statement the institute has had a most successful year, both socially and financially. Special thanks were expressed to the headmaster, teachers and school committee for their generosity in various ways.
Mrs. Tabor, the popular President, and Mrs. Arcus, the capable secretary, were both returned to office unanimously. The following committee was elected : Mesdames Webb, Spiers, Tait, Hannan, Linguard and Scott.
Several new members were nominated and elected. During the afternoon Mrs. Wright, of Titahi Bay, gave an interesting talk on the aspirations of the institute and work in general. Mrs. Wright also judged the chocolate sponge competition, which was won by Mrs. Carl, with Mrs. Spiers second. Numerous competitions were greatly enjoyed, first prizes being taken by Mesdames Taylor, Alward and Aldrich. A very dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames H. Kilsby, Linguard and Carle. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close.
LEVIN W.I. ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the Levin Women's Institute Mrs. Treen (President) was in the chair, and welcomed Mrs. Hume, of the South Wellington Federation, and all visitors and members. After formal business had been dealt with, Mrs. Hume took the chair and conducted the annual election.
The ballot was then taken and while the papers were being counted, Mrs. Hume gave a very inspiring and helpful address on the growth of the Women's Institute movement, and making particular reference to the Women's Creed. This was a great help to young and old members. The result of the election was as follows : —Committee : Mesdames Edwards, Fiegler, Frizzell, Gaudin, Henderson, Inglis, W. Ransom, A. Ransom, L. R. Salmons, Closey, Rankine, Treen, Thorpe. Mrs. Thorpe was elected President for the ensuing year. A dainty supper was served by Mrs. W. Salmons, assisted by members of the committee.
