HARDER RUGBY.
COMMENT ON PLEA. (By Telegraph • Pres? Assn.-Copyright) Received Sunday, 7.5 p.m. SYDNEY, March 19. Commenting on Mr. Baker's statement at Auckland that there were too many soft footballers playing Rugby to-day, Mr; E. N. Greatorex, the Rugby writer and critic, says: “Without prejudice I would like to ask Mr. Baker if he would have made the same statements had New Zealand come out on top after the tests against the Springboks last season. Mr. Baker’s remarks are not new. I’ll wager it was said by the former footballers of 1900 about the footballers of 1890 and by the oldtimers of 1890 about the players of 1880.”
The opinions of other former internationals and referees support Mr. Greatorex, but Mr. Miller, secretary of the New South Wales Rugby League, said there was something in Mr. Baker’s comment. Players at present did not concentrate on the game as much as they did in the past.
