SLIP BLOCKS GORGE RAILWAY.

TRAIN SERVICE CANCELLED TEMPORARILY. The heavy rains of the last two days have been responsible for the bringing down of a slip across the railway line in the Manawatu gorge and necessitating the cancellation temporarily of all rail service. The slip is located between the two long tunnels at the Palmerston North end of the gorge and w r as discovered by the driver , of the mixed goods and passenger train which leaves Palmerston North for-Hawke's Bay at 5.10 p.m. 'He was able to pull up before actually encountering the slip. The train wms taken back to Ashhurst and the passengers taken on by bus. A gang of workmen set to work immediately to remove the obstruction, but their work was hampered by darkness. As far as the highway through ; the gorge is concerned, there was a small slip down last night, but traffic was able to get through.
