UNUSUAL AIK, ACCIDENT

(By Telegraph-r-ress Assn.-Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 8. .Alan Villiers, while learning to fly, was preparing to land at Southend airport when a seagull flew at the windscreen and rebounded into Villiers’ face. The aeroplane nose-dived and Viliiers was injured about the head and the face.

At a conference between the rival skippers in the square-riggers’ race from Newport it was decided that the Joseph Conrad beat the Seven Seas by 55 seconds elapsed time, her total time being 10 days 6 hours 57 seconds.

RAILWAY CHANGES OF MAGNITUDE

The London-North Eastern Railway is erecting large signs at points of interest along the track, such as county boundaries, the halfway mark on the east coast route between London and Edinburgh, and the boundary between England and Scotland, for the information of passengers. Big changes are being made in the underground stations and connections at King’s Cross, which is used by 40 milion yearly. There will be ten entrances to the combined station at various points around the roadway junction in front of the London-North Eastern station and the resulting subways will make a valuable contribution to the safety of pedestrians. Reconstruction will eventually provide for better connection between the metropolitan and country line trains which at present end at Baker street, with • the inner circle and city trains. Recruits for all arms of the regular army last week numbered 571, an increase of 109 over the corresponding week last year. SCOTTISH BY-ELECTION (British Official Wireless.) The result of the by-election in the Springburn Division, Glasgow, was as follows: —

Mrs. Agnes Hardie (Labour) 14,859. Colonel Shaw (National Conservative) 8881. There is no change. The successful candidate’s husband held the seat at the 1935 general election. This is the 37th by-election since the last general election; Of these Government -parties lost eight. A by-election is pending at North Islington.
