Personals. ~

Mrs. Caruthers, Wellington, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. S. Shaw, Stout Street.

Mrs. D. Edginton, Wellington, has been the guest of Mrs. McG-uckin for a few days.

Mr. A. R. Blackwood attended the funeral of the late Mr. J. Burgess, of Tuai, and one time of Mangaore, last week-end.

Mr C. Grey and his daughter, Miss Jean Grey, left at the' beginning of this week to take up their residence at Otaki.

Misses Dorothy and Betty Best have returned to St. Matthews' School, Masterton, and Annette Mitchell and Josephine Law to Wanganui College. Miss Roach accompanied her sister Rita to Wellington from where she sailed for Sydney to continue nursing in a Sydney private hospital. Mrs. T. Moynihan, East Road, accompanied by her aunt, Mrs. Hunt, Karori, Wellington, left last week for Rotorua on a health recruiting trip.

° Mrs. C. Searle, Hari Hari, Hokitika, has been staying with her sister, Mrs. R. C. Andrews, and has taken her niece Iris back to live with her for some considerable time.

Miss C. Picard, acting-captain of the Girl Guide Company, is at present attending a course of instruction for Girl Guide officers which is being held at Wallis House, Lower Hutt. Mr. and Mrs. J. Delaney, who have been residing in Auckland and Helensville for the past six months, are at present visiting their daughter, Mrs. F. Bowe, Moutoa. A Freak Egg.

One hears of very large sized eggs, double or treble yolked eggs, but this week a housewife, on breaking an egg for cake-making, found it contained only white, not even a trace of yolk was to be seen. Social Aftrenoon. No doubt it was owing to so many people being away for the school holidays that the monthly social afternoon held by members of Ven Bede’s Anglican Church was not quite as well attended as usual, nevertheless, an enjoyable afternoon was spent at the Parish Hall. Conversation was punctuated by three competitions ■which were won by Mrs. D. Murray, Mrs. Craig and Mrs. H. G. Leng-Ward. Mrs. Clark and her daughter, Mary, contributed two pianoforte duets. Mrs. Murray and Mrs Picard were the hostesses and served afternoon tea. As a conclusion, Mrs. C. Easton played popular song numbers. “Kitchen” Party. The Parish Hall was the rendezvous for a number of young folk and some older ones the other evening when a “kitchen” party -was given for Miss Avis Carter in view of her approaching manage. Dancing provided the major portion of the programme, an uncle of Miss Carter, Mr. T. Carter (Foxton), supplying the music assisted by Mr. W. Neville, also of Foxton. Items were contributed by Mesdames Clark and Allerby (vocal duet), J. Jamieson (song), May Goodwillie and Connie Packer (dance duo) and a humorous sketch by May Goodwillie, entitled ‘ ‘ The Train to Blackball. ’ ’ A delicious home-made supper was handed round, following which Mr. J. T. Bovis called upon Miss Carter to open the various parcels and little Joan Radford presented her with a posy of flowers. Mr. Ivan Smith (Foxton), on behalf of Miss Carter, thanke deveryone for their gifts and for coming along and being so friendly, also Mrs. W. Radford and Mrs. G. AlcGuekin, Snr., for arranging the party. POPULAR HEADMASTER. TENDERED FAREWELL BY RESIDENTS. The Parish Hall was crowded with parents, friends and pupils to bid farewell to a Very popular headmaster Mr. [. MacDonald, and his wife. The evening was devoted to dancing and musical items contributed by Mrs. Lind and Richard Lind, piano duets; Mr. Campbell, songs; Air. J. T. Bovis, recitations; Joan Clough, tap dances; Auburn Vaughan, songs. The guests were presented with a handsome armchair from the residents of Shannon and district and ex-pupils; an afternoon tea service from the School Committee; a crystal vase from the W.D.F.U.; and a modern pottery flower jug from the Plunket Society. Airs. MacDonald, who had also served for a short time on the Girl Guide Committee, was the recipient of a posy from the committee presented by Joan Radford. Air. W. Clayton (representing the Mayor), Mr. L. H. Best (chairman of the School Committee), Mrs. Cook (President of the W.D.F.U.), Airs. C. Easton (President of the Plun ket Society), Mr. C. M. Cronquest (R.S.A.), Air. F. Thurston (Golf Cmo ' and Alessrs Campbell and Bovis all spoke of the excellent work of Air. and Mrs. MacDonald. Mr, and Mrs. MacDonald both expressed thanks for the many gifts and expressions of goodwill received, saying they would cany with them very happy memories of Shannon. Air. AlacDonald has been appointed headmaster at the Berhamnore School, Wellington. So far no appointment had been made to fill the vacancy at Shannon, Air. Ale Sweeney being in chai’ge in the meantime.
