ABATTOIR KILLINGS.

STOCK FOE WELLINGTON. Of recent months some stock has been slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs for Wellington butchers, and at the monthly meeting of the Levin Borough Council last evening the following letter was read from the treasurer of the Wellington City Council; “Under section 27 of the Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1908, the hanging fees-are payable on all meat consumed in the Wellington abattoir district. I shall be glad if you will kindly advise me of all stock-slaughtered in the Levin abattoir since. Ist May, 1937, on behalf of ‘Mr. X ; .”

The town clerk, Mr. 11. L. Jenkins, advised having replied: I regret that we are unable to supply the information sought, as, though a butcher kills certain stock at our abattoir, we cannot vouch for the destination of the meat after it has left our premises. In fact, wc know that in certain cases meat has left here in the trucks presumably for Wellington, but some has been delivered to shops en route, and has never reached the city boundaries. On the other hand, meat which we do not think is destined for Wellington, may, and lias, ultimately reached city shops. The position is beset with many difficulties, and we feel that in fairness to all parties, we cannot divulge the private business of our clients, for we are here only to do the killing and it is no concern of ours to ascertain, or presume, where the meat is going to. I regret our inability to comply with your request.” A further letter on the subject was received from the town clerk of the Wellington City Council as under: “The information which we asked you to supply was not the amount of meat which you thought was consigned to Wellington, but the total amount slaughtered from Ist May to date for ‘Br. XV’ If you are not prepared to furnish this information on your own responsibility I i would be glad if you would refer the request to your council.” 1 The council decided that it could not [supply the information, endorsed the itown clerk’s action and received the letters.
