MEN ON SUSTENANCE.
WORK BEING- PROVIDED. BOROUGH AND COUNTY IMPROVEMENTS. Details of the works which are to be placed under way in the Levin Borough and the Horowhenua County by subsidised labour resultant upon the offer made by the acting-Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb) at a conference of: local bodies held last week are now available. The conference was held at Palmerston North on Friday, when the Minister met representatives of the majority of the local bodies of Horowhenua and Manawatu. Offering up to £4 per week per man as, a subsidy from the Employment Promotion Fund towards the placing in employment for four months a large number of able-bodied men now on sustenance, the Minister found this freely accepted, and as a result it was estimated that almost immediate employment for 250 men could be found throughout the district.
Work In Levin. The Levin Borough Council was represented at the conference by HiaWorship the Mayor, Mr. P. w/Goldsmith, and Cr. H. Walker, and an undertaking was made to provide work for ten men within the borough for the four months’ period. It is now planned that with this labour, for a commencement, a good deal of very necessary kerbing and channelling w r ork will be carried out. The streets on which this improvement is contemplated are the eastern side of Oxford Street from Bath Street to Mako Mako Road, and from Mr. D. S. Mackenzie’s premises north to York Street. Twelve chains will also be kerbed and channelled on Cambridge Street. County Road Improvements.
The Ilorowhenua County Council has undertaken to provide employment for 20 men in two gangs of ten for th« duration of the scheme. One gang will commence work on Tuesday next on Buckley Road, Shannon, and the other on Rahui Road, Otaki. In each case extensive improvements will be made, the roads being widened and dangerous corners cut back.
