CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT,

BOTH TITLE HOLDERS DEFEATED.

Last night’s play at the Dominion championship and handicap badminton tournament was alive with surprises, brilliance and excitement. At timesrare heights in the execution of a fast and engrossing net game were atiumed, but never so splendidly as in :!w defeats of the Dominion men’s and. Women’s singles champions. Undoubtedly the most brilliant game of the night was that in which J. Spudding (New Plymouth) defeated the New Zealand champion, J. ,J. Neale (Wellington) in a memorable match, with the issue hanging in the balance until the end of each set. Second only to this match was the victory of the young Dunedin girl, Miss M. Kerr, who rose from the ranks of the virtually unknown, to defeat decisively the New Zealand women’s champion, Mrs Phyb lis Wren. Miss Kerr displayed an ideal match temperament and is marked for a glowing future in the game. The programme put through last night wasthe heaviest in the tournament at present. .Several of the championships reached the semi-final stage and play continued until almost midnight. fhe tournament will finish to-morrow" night with the finals in all divisions.. Spedding (New Plymouth) beat Neale 15/6, 3/15, 15/8;,. Hawkesworth (Masterton) beat Handley 15/11, 5/0. Women’s Singles.—Second round: Miss Edmondson (Hamilton) beatn Miss Wade (Auckland) 11/6, 13/2;. Miss Kerr (Dunedin) beat Mrs Wren (Auckland) 1.1/3, -5; Miss Fleming (Wellington) beat M.rs H. Fow (Hamilton) 1/8; 11/2; Miss Ramsay (Auckland) beat Miss D, King (Wellington) VJ, 14/0.

Men’s Doubles.—First round: Clough and Gower beat Payton and Collins 15/5, 15/5. Second round; Dallimore and Shale beat O’Connor and Orr 15/2, 15/8. Hawkesworth and Pearce beat. Clough and uower 15/6, 15/12.

Women's Doubles.—First round: Misses Kerr and Bolwell beat Misses Clough and Dempster 15/7, 15/11, Mesdaraes Fow and Yendall beat Misses Fleming and King 12/5, 7/(i, 5/0.

Mixed doubles. —First round: Handley and Miss King beat Dallimore and Miss Dempster 2/15, 15/1, 15/11.. Second round: Hawkesworth and Miss Fleming beat Anderson and Miss Inwood 15/1, 1 <l/7, 5/(1; Fow and Mrs Fow beat Shale and Miss Ramsay 16/5, 5/9, 15/6; Pearce and Miss Kerr beat Dempster and Miss Edmondson 18/14, 5/0. Their first experience of snow was enjoyed by a number of visitors to New Plymouth when a party of fourteen. were the guests of the Taranaki Badminton Association on a visit to the North Egmoi.it Mountain House yesterday afternoon. The weather was too rough for clear visibility, but snow fell during the party’s stay at the hostel. This afternoon visiting players will bp entertained to a bus observation tour of New Plymouth and afternoon tea at Pukekura Park.
