SHANNON NOTES.

(From Shannon News). Personal. Mr B. Annersley, who lias been working in Masterton for some months, has returned to Shannon. Master Erie Hook, eldest son of Mr and .Mrs C. Hook, has gone to Taupo to work in Mr. W. Quarrie’s shop. Mr and Mrs J. Mabey left on Monday for Longburn where they will in future reside. Mrs Waring Taylor, is attending the conference of Women's Institutes now being held in Dunedin. Nurse McKee, who has been stationed at Featherston for the past twelve years, has commenced her duties as Blanket Nurse for this district. A car load of people from Shannon went to Wellington last week-end for the purpose of attending the consecration of the new Bishop of Wellington. Mr R. Parrant of the P.W.D. staff, Mangaore, leaves at the end of this week, with Mrs Parrant, for Khandal--1 a 1 1 , to which pleace he has been transferred for a period of six months. The condition of Mrs Free, -who has been an inmate of the Palmerston N, Hospital for the past fortnight and who Is suffering from blood poisoning, is causing her family anxiety. Mr Fred Mam of the P.W.D., Arapuni, passed through Shannon this week on his way to Wharamn, Marlborough, to which place he has been transferred.

Mr C. Wish art and Miss R. Harding, accompanied by Miss B. Wish art, of Levin, left by car on Saturday, for Thames, where they will be the guests of Mr and Mrs Wishart. The many Shannon friends of Mrs Clifford Jones, Eltham, will regret to hear that she found it necessary to undergo a serious operation at the dawera Hospital. A recent telegram received locally stated that the operation was successful. • 1 Novelty Evening at Mangaore. An especially jolly novelty evening, the funds being devoted to further the candidature of the Mangaore candidates in the Blanket Photographic Competition was held in the Mangaore Social Hall on Tuesday evening. Mrs Massey contributed two recitations, which were greatly appreciated. The competition winners were Miss Lindsay, Mrs MacDonald, Mr Blackwood and Mrs Kilminster senr. The beautiful embroidered cushion donated by Mrs Massey was won by Mrs Fred Ivilminstcr. Lantern Lecture. On Thursday evening of last week a lantern lecture entitled “Renewed Life” was given in the Presbyterian Church by Mr F. C. Perry, New Zealand Secretary for the Mission to Lepers. An attractive (though at times affecting) number of slides were shown illustrating tlit; wonderful ministry of healing and of hope and comfort amongst lepers in various countries. The Mission to Lepers founded in IS7-1 is an interdenominational and international society engaged solely in work among lepers and their children. Its object is to preach the Gospel to the lepers and to provide those unfortunate and abandoned people with shelter, food, and clothing, and medical treatment; to rescue their healthy children, and to help to bring about the extinction of leprosy. Entertainment for Plunket Funds. On [Monday night at the Renown Theatre an interesting and varied entertainment was given oy the Palmerston North Ford Entertainers, headed by Mr Sclwyu, the proceeds of which mere for the local branch of the Plan ket Society. Beginning a little late, Mr Selwyn started the ball rolling by leading the audience in community singing which was followed by a duet by Mesdamcs Jones and Prince. A member of the party played the steel guitar and Mr Woods, the comedian, convulsed the audience with his varied and topical jokes. A tap dance and a pianoforte duet played by Mr and Mrs Prince was followed by a thrill for the children a ventriloquist. A saxophone solo and short, stories told and acted in costume brought forth roars

of laughter. At the conclusion of the entertainment, Mr Hyde, on behalf of ■the Plunket Society thanked the Ford Entertainers—the personnel occupying four cars—who came down from Palm'erston North entirely at their own expense to assist the Plunket Society in raising funds. Mr Selwyn replied by leading the entertainers in the song “Show me the way to go Home." The National Anthem was sung and the Entertainers wore then served with supper at Laurvig’s Hall. The prize for the lucky seat at the entertainment was won by Miss N. Stowers, of IV tangaweka.
