MASSEY MUST HANG.
WOMAN'S STORY NOT BELIEVED
(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Wednesday, .10.20 p.m. SYDNEY, June JO.
The Minister of Justice (Mr. Martin) in the Assembly to-day mentioned tho case of James Masscy, aged 21, who shot and killed Nonnan Stead after attempting to rob a service station at Darlinghurst, and who is to be hanged next Monday. Mr. Martin said lie had received a statutory declaration from Mrs. Elizabeth Bellingham who declared she was inside Ste i i 's garage and witnessed the shooting which so upset her that she had since been unable to tell her story, consequently she ha J remained in the background, blie described the shooting as accidental. Stead made a grab at M'assey, seized his wrist and the revolver went off.
Mr. Martin said the detectives had investigated the woman's story which was so at variance with known and undoubted facts that the Government were unable to place the slightest credence in it, consequently the law would be allowed tu take its course. Mr. Martin said there was abundant evidence that Massey had fired the shot at least two feet from Stead's body, therefore it was deliberate.
