OTAKI RIVER CONTROL.
MATTER OF EXTREME URGENCY. That the question of protection of farm properties and roads subject to Hooding from the Otaki River had now reached a stage of extreme nrgenev was the opinion e.vpresscd by Mr C. A. Monk, chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, at the monthly meeting of that body on Saturday. Reporting to the Council upon a meeting, sponsored by the Otaki River Board, which he had attended on behalf of the Council, Mr Monk stated that it had been revealed that the settlors concerned had already spent some £2OOO in combatting the river over a period of many years, but tin 1 position was now worse than it had over before been. They had now reached the end of their resources and felt justified in asking for assistance, and as a result the meeting had decided to approach the Government in order that a grant be made.
■Considering the large losses which had already been suffered, and the even heavier ones which were likely to come about in the future, said Mr Monk, it was to be hoped that the matter would shortly be placed in the. hands of the Public Works Department #
