DENIALS AND ACCUSATIONS IN ALBERTA. PREMIER’S ELOQUENT SILENCE. (By Telegraph-Press Assn. -Copyright) Received Sunday, 9.55 p.m. EDMONTON, Feb. 8.
Basic dividends wove never promised by anybody, Mr J. H. Unwin, Social Credit Government Whip, asserted in the Legislature when Mr W. R. Howson, the Liberal leader demanded that the Alberta Government should resign if it fails to keep the promises made to the people. Mr Howson declared the Government had no intention at this session or the next of paying the promised 25 dollars monthly dividend. He challenged any Cabinet Minister to say he had pledged himself to the payment. “Did you ever bear anyone say that adults would be g' v 'en 25 dollars a month?" asked Mr W. J. Lampey, a ;Social Credit member.
“Many times/ replied Mr Howson. He said he had heard the Premier say it could and would be paid. The Premier promised and the people accepted.' •Standing in the most sacred place in the world —a pulpit with his eyes turned to heaven and his hand raised he promised." Premier Aberhart made no reply.
Referring to Major Douglas’ statement in London that the Dominion Government Loan Council plan aims me rely to protect oondholders Air Aberhart, in an interview, said: “I believe Alberta can work harmoniously under the plan but will never surrender one iota of her financial autonomy.”
