TRANS-PACIFIC SHIPPING.

COMPANY TO WITHDRAW FROM SERVICE. EFFECTS OF FOREIGN COMPETITION RESPONSIBLE. i(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) (By British Official Wireless). (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) RUGBY, December 12. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam 'Navigation Co. is to withdraw from the service of the Empire shipping, which for about half a century has linked Australia and Now Zealand with San Francisco. In announcing this decision, Sir Alexander Shaw said it was entirely due to the disastrous effects of a highly subsidised foreign competition. If the British Government and the Governments of Canada, Australia and New Zealand wished to retain any service of British Empire ships across the Pacific, they would have to decide on a policy of assisting those who had been upholding the British flag at a grave loss.
