STATUS OF AMATEURS.
(To the Editor). Bir ; —Kindly permit me the space to reply to both letters, apparently written by the same hand under different names, to wit the Levin Cash Athletic and Cycling 1 Club and Mr. B. Jones, secretary Levin Cash Athletic and Cycling Club. It seems that this club cun find no other way of endeavouring to wash -dirty linen and it seems to me that it would be better for these matters to be loft to their proper place. Let me use the words of the President of the Horowhenua Rugby Union, and say leave the comedy and the tragedy to its proper place and stop vilifying men who are working for the interests of amateur sport. It ill becomes even the Cash Club or its officials to use even a double edged weapon of sportsmanship, for their actions speak louder than words and some of the actions of the members of the Cash Club require a little polishing up ere they deserve the caption of good sports. Mr. B. Julies says by and large that the committee of the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was at their last AVednesday night meeting touting for new members. All honour to them for doing so, but don't let Mr. B. Jones forget the desirable tactics of his club and its members. Finally I would point out to Mr B. Jones that when we want rules for the running of amateur events we don't look to the professional side of sport for them. Likewise, as amateurs, we don't wish to run the professional side of the sport. I for one do not altogether hold with the dog in the manger attitude of either side. Hence, let’s have sport for sport’s sake and not sport for squabiiling’s sake. —I remain, yours, etc., C. T. WILDSMITH.
