During the last ten days the price of butter in local retail shops has gradually risen to 1/4. At Waipukurau, factory butter is being retailed at l/'o per lb. It is understood that a movement has started in Levin to form a Progressive League, the principle object of such being to make recommendations to local bodies on matters affecting the welfare of the town. As the result of the work of some person or persons, extending over the last week or two, ;1 . number of dogowners have found their canine pets poisoned. iSueh a large number have fallen victims to the activities of the fiend that some owners are muzzling their animals to prevent .them "picking up baits." A sea lion, of a friendly disposition, has been taking a keen interest in the regions beyond his domain of the (St. Clair beach, JDunedin. On Wednesday morning it decided to take a walk and made its way up Beach Street to the St. Clair tramway terminus, depositing its bulky form on the tramline. It took little heed of the clanging gong of the car that was ready to leave for the city and had to be chased off the lines before the tramcar could proceed. On its return to the beach via Bedford Street it upset a young man on a bicycle, but halted to accept tit-bits from women and children. Later it was seen accepting a. drink of co'rdial out of a ibottle. There w-as a large attendance of dancers at the Kimberley Hall la,st evening on the occasioii of the Kimberley Women's Institute dance of the season. Pickering (cornet), while much appreciated extras were contributed by Mr Pickering's orchestra. Mr W. 0. Neas carried out the duties of M.C. A tasty supper was dispensed by the Institute Social Committee and a highly enjoyable function concluded in the small hours. Butter is now np, but groceries are down in price for cash.
