Surveying Pacific Airways Route
AMERICAN EXPEDITION LEAVES HONOLULU (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Tuesday, 11.40 p.m. HONOLUL 0, • Sept. !). The airways expedition survey ot the Antipodes route left Honolulu today aboard the American coastguard cutter Itasca for Jarvis, Baker and Howland islands. Seven Jlawaiians aboard will replace the crews left on those islands four months ago to make daily weather reports. v The expedition, which is under the direction of the United States Department of Commerce Aviation Bureau, included Mr. J. waiter Doyle, Collector of Customs, Honolulu; Lieutenant C. W. Johnson, a veteran navy airman who plotted the course for Amelia Earhart’s Pacific flight; Captain H. A. Meyer, in charge of the technical equipment; Captain M. B. Burette, with four army technical experts as assistants; Air. William T. Miller, Department of Commerce, Hawaii; and an agent of Mr. L. Fullardice, owner of Palmyra Island. The expedition took 3000 gallons ot drinking water and canned supplies indicating that the studies along the prospective? air route will continue for several months. Commander W. N. Derby said the Itasca wil* return to Honolulu during October calling at Kingman’s Reef to survey a large area suitable for seaplanes. This is the Itasca's third survey along the route to .Samoa. Dr. Dana Coman, of the yacht Kinkajou, has sot up radio stations m three American camps. Dr. Coman will go to Honolulu in October after visiting Fanning and Christmas islands and possibly others. He expects Mr. Harold Hatty to join him on the tour of these isii.nds.
