FOR BUSY FINGERS.
PINE-AND-RAFFIA BASKETS. Take a disc of three-ply wool the size and shape required for the bottom of the basket and bore small holes lin apart all round the disc edge. Thread a rallia-needle with ralHa and work a thick row of blanket-stitch into the holes. Now take a bundle of pineneedles the thickness of a lead-pencil, hold them in the left hand against (he outside of the disc, and with a tluoad of rallia sew them to the blanket-stitch, using a series of V-shaped stitches and going right over 1 lie pine-needles each time. Add more needles as the others give out, and when the first row is
complete stitch on the second row in a like manner, being careful that the lips of the second row of V slitc'ies (its immediately in the centre of the underneath V’s. In making the last row of tin' basket use the bundles of pine-needles slightly thicker. Ibneneedles can he worked up either green or dried and look well if one or more contrasting colours of ratlin is used in the sewing. Another idea is to paint the finished basket any desired colour with Draw-hat dye.
