MAHENO TO BE ABANDONED.
SALVAGE EFFORTS FRUITLESS.
JAPS WILL LOSE £17,000,

The attempts to salvage the stranded steamer Maheno at Frazer Island have been abandoned. The vessel ,is waterlogged. She is heeling over to starboard and there is a large hole in her side through which the water is rushing. She is also deeply embedded in the sand. It is stated that the Union Company sold the Maheno to the Japanese for £11,750 Australian currency, but with other expenses since occurred the total loss will be in the neighbourhood of £17,000, which is not covered by insurance. The Oonah will pick up the Maheno’s crew. JAP CREW EN ROUTE TO DOMINION. Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. BRISBANE, July 14. Thirty-two Japanese arrived by the Atsuta Maru and will leave Sydney by the Aorangi next. Thursday for New Zealand to take away another Union Company steamer, the Kaitoke, which is going to the shipbreakers.
