AUSTRIAN CHANCELLOR. IN CAR SMASH. ■WIFE AND CHAUFFEUR KILLED; SON INJURED.
'.(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Sunday, 7.5 p.m. VIENNA, July 13. * The Austrian Chancellor, Herr Schuschnigg, was injured, his wife killed, and his son and chauffeur seriously injured when their car collided *, with a tree at Linz. A report that the accident was due to foul play is officially denied. The chauffeur was suffering from sunstroke and lost control. He died of internal injuries a few minutes after being, taken to hospital. Frau Schuschnigg was killed instalitly. Herr Schuschnigg's son is a violinist and underwent an operation. The Chancellor owes his life to being thrown from the car. His injuries •are superficial. He is suffering from shock and broke down when he heard of his wife's death. He went to the chapel where, the remains were placed and knelt in prayer. Cabinet hastily met and decided to recall Count Starhcmberg from Venice to take control till Herr Schuschnigg is restored to health.
EXTRAORDINARY PRECAUTIONS TAKEN. FEARS OF TROUBLE I - " Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. VIENNA, July 14. Extraordinary precautions were taken following Herr Schuschnigg’s accident owing to nervousness due to the nearness of the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Dollfuss. The aux-j iliary police were mobilised and the Heimwchr has been ordered to stand by. It is reported that Frau Schuschnigg recently received an anonymous parcel of mourning accompanied by a note: “You may find those useful in the near future. ” . Herr Schuschnigg suffered concussion and docs not reihjpmber the accident., CITY ~IN HERR SCHUSCHNIGG ONLY SLIGHTLY INJURED. Accompanied by Herr Schuschnigg, the body of Frau Schuschnigg has arrived from Linz. Count Starhemberg ‘ and the whole Cabinet ,wcre on the platform. The coffin rvas blessed by the priests and then taken to Hertzing parish church. Herr Schuschnigg was only slightly injured in the shoulder.
