SHIP’S APPRENTICE DESERTS “ FOR GOLD LURE
(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Sunday, Midnight. MELBOURNE, July 14. A message received from Thursday Island states that Bertie Hjelstrom, a 21-year-old apprentice, deserted the barque C. B. Pedersen and is bobbing about somewhere in Torres Strait in an old wooden bathtub with an improvised sail. He is on his way to New Guinea. At least it is hoped he is, because when he left on Wednesday night heavy seas were coming up and the crew of the C. B. Pedersen fear for his safety. Hjelstroni, who was lured by tales of gold to be won in New Guinea fifty miles away, took only a small supply of water, food and clothes.
