Davis Cup Tennis
NEW ZEALAND v. AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) LONDON, May I. E. D. Andrews, captain of the New Zealand Davis Cup team, told the Australian Press Association's representative that A. C. Stedman and C. E. Malfroy would play in the singles against Australia. The doubles pair had not been chosen. Andrews has recovered from a sprained ankle. The New Zealand team is being coached in London. The Australians will go to Eastbourne on May 4 for practice. On March 2 ( 0 Andrews stated that the New Zealand team would be selected after the Bournemouth tourney, which is to conclude on Saturday. He said then that Stedman and Malfroy j would probably play in the doubles. Commander Cazalet, representative of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Council on the International Federation, is assisting in coaching and managing the team. The match between New Zealand and Australia is to commence at Eastbourne on May 10. A cable on March 25 stated that Mal--1 froy was ill; Andrews, in spite of mucl) I practice at squash rackets, was unfit; I Stedman had yet to begin tournament play; and J. E. Giesen, the other member of the team, was recovering from a Rugby football injury. On April 3 it was announced that the New Zealand i team would comprise Andrews, Malfrov and Stedman. The Australian Davis Cnp players are: __j. H. Crawford. V. McGrath, A K. Quist, and D. Turnbull, with Mr. Norman Brookes as non-playing capI tain.
Progress at Bournemouth CHILEAN LADY BEATEN. LONDON, May 1. The Bournemouth hard-ourt tennis championships were continued to-day. Results include:— Men's singles, third round: Austin beat Avory, 6 —o, G—o, 6 —2; Farquharson beat Lee, 10—8, 6—4, 6 —l; Prenn beat Sharpe, 7—5, 6—2, 6—l; Perry beat Peters, 7—5, 6—3, 9—7. Men's doubles, first round: Farquharson and Kirby beat Sharpe and Tuckey, 4—6, 9—7, 2—6, 6—o, 6—?.; Perry and Butler beat W. Henderson and Lysaght, 6—3, 2—6, 6—4, 6—3.
