EASIER ACCESS TO SALEYARDS

FOR stock coming from the SOUTH. REQUEST NOT ACCEDED TO BY COUNTY COUNCIL. That the Council should purchase the necessary land and undertake the formation of a road on the eastern side of the railway line from the saleyards to Kimberley Road, was the suggestion of a letter received at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on .Saturday from 'the Levin Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The reason for the request, the letter stated, was that access to the yards from the southern end of the district would be made easier. The chairman (Mr. C. A. Monk) said that this road was not essential and in fact the only ones who would benefit by it were the property owners. The money necessary to construct such a road could be spent in a better way, even to the advantage of these farmers, who had made the request. Cr. A. J. Gimblett said that the re quest did not come from the property owners in that part, but from the farmers who were driving stock to the yards from the southern end of the district. In endorsing the remarks of the chairman he. could sympathise with those concerned. He suggested a road from the Main, Road straight across the railway line. Cr. A. M. Colquhoun said, that he could not see how such a road would benefit much.

;Cr. F. J. Ryder was of the opinion t'hal the road would have advantages as a stock route, but the Council could not undertake the construction of it at the present time. Cr. Gimblett pointed out that he had seen a number of congestions of stock and traffic at the railway crossing leading to the yards, as it was the only way to the yards. The chairman asked if the stock coming from the south was sufficient to justify such an expenditure. Cr. Gimblett said that there was a “paper” road running through the part in question and before many years the road would be justified. The matter should be kept steadily in View, but at present the Council could not see its way to accede to the request.
