A white sparrow had been seen in the vicinity of Otaki 'Railway during the past few days.

The Rahui and Otaki '.'basketball teams indulged in a practice match on Saturday, when play was mediocre. At times, however, it was interesting.

A meeting of the Rahui Football

social committee was held at Otaki , Railway on' Thursday, Mr. E. W. Gk •Rule presiding. It was decided to hold euchre and a dance on! 16th May. The donors of euchre prizes were thanked for their kindness. The next meeting was fixed for May 10th. .

- A number of young men have decided to leave Otaki this week for the Opepe camp, between Taupo and Rotorua, for tree-planting. The wages are an inducement while, with the exception of blankets and clothes, the men are found. Those who have offered to go are , Messrs H.. Maddock, W. McEwen, S. and W. Hammond, N. Lima, B. Hemara, G-. Mohi, and Hohipuha.

The footballers' danee at Waikanae on Friday evening was an event that delighted all present. The attendance was large and the arrangements complete. Mrs. Royal did the catering in her usual fine manner, • Mr. Beale and Miss O'Connor gave a very fine demonstration of the latest dancing, Mr. Wineera excelled himself at tap dancing, while the music was first-class. Mr. F. Meyer was a capable M.C., and Mr. "W. G. Kussell an energetic secretary.

The death occurred at Gisborne on Thursday night of Mr. Henry F. Badeley, father of Mrs. C. Cooksley, of Otaki. The deceased, who had resided in Gisborne for many years, was well-known, and during his residence there and in Tlmaru he made many friends. He was a leading member of the Timaru band, and won many contests. "While in Otaki the late Mr. Badeley played with the local band, and was regarded as a valued member. The deceased leaves a widow and two grown-up daughters to mourn their loss.

The Rev. and Mrs. M. Ayrton and family, who left Otaki for Tai Tapu, were welcomed on arrival by a very large gathering. The proceedings opened with a high tea, in the Sunday School, served, by the women of the congregation, after which the service of induction was conducted by the Rev. Eaton, president of the conference, in the church. Messrs W. Barnett and W. Bray, circuit stewards, welcomed Mr. Ayrton. The Rev. H. Ryan addressed the congregation on behalf of the ministers of Christehurch, and the Rev. W. Macrae, of the Lincoln Presbyterian Church, on behalf of the Presbyterians of Tai Tapu also-wel-comed Mr. Ayrton and his family. After the induction service, a programme of sacred songs and duets was contributed by Mrs. A. Ledshaw,.,Miss Mollie (Mctson and Mr. Sayers, the accompaniments being played by Mr. Evans. Mr. T., O. Morgan, secretary to the Methodist Church, presented the annual report which showed that during the year the church had suffered severely by the loss of several of its valued members. He expressed best wishes towards the new minister on behalf of the Sunday School. Mr. Ayrton expressed his thanks to all for their kind wishes.
