Trading Coupons Act

A CONVICTION ENTERED WELLINGTON, Last Night. In a reserved judgment delivered by the Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) to-day, it was held that an offer to supply linen glass cloths through a retail soft goods company by Lever Bros. (N.Z.) Ltd., in return for soap cartons was a breach of the Trading Coupons Act. A fine of ten shillings was imposed. Mr. Page said in his opinion that defendants offered to their customers two alternatives—either a sum of ninepence in cash for the redemption of the cartons, or the supply of a glass cloth, said to be worth 1/6. It seemed that defendants had agreed to redeem their trading coupons otherwise than foi money, that that in the present case they had in fact redeemed coupons not for' cash but by causing to be sent to the purchaser a glass cloth. This action came within the statute. Security for appeal was fixed.
