Miss Jerome Spencer, founder of New Zealand Women's Institutes, who has been spending some time travelling in Great Britain, is expected to return to .the Dominion toward the end of this month.
The death recently of Mr George Broughton (Ngarangi Katitea) removes one of the most striking figures and best-known personalities in Maori life in Hawera. The son of an Army officer married to a Maori lady of high descent, he shared many of the best attributes to both races. Of magnificent physique, he was a distinguished athlete in his youth, and fit the first Hawera sports meeting, held in a paddock ; the South Eoad, about 1874, he carried off most of the field events. He was always a great patron of sport.
An old resident of Palmerston North, Mr Emil (Petrus Ekstedt, who built the publid hospital, passed away on Sunday. The deceased, who was 79 years of age, took up residence there upon his arrival in the Dominion 41 years agj. For some years he was engaged at the Sash nnd/Dppr- Company, subsequently taking over that business anc^, conducting it for a period; In later years he . retired from business and devoted himself to pbultry-f arming, in Albert St. He is survived by one son, Mr A. E.
Ekstedt, and three step-daughters, Mrs Arthur Wolff : (Wellington), Mips; T. . Sandberg (Lucknow, India), and Miss A. Sandberg (Lucknow, India), and . Miss A.' Sandberg (Palmerston North) •
He was predeceased by his wife. about,. 15 years ago. ■.
The death occurred at his residence in Palmerston North last week, of Mr Jens Peter Petersen, who' arrived at Napier from Denmark in 1875. He became a settler in the Wairarapa, and also assisted in the laying of the railway across the Eimutakas. The deceased was for many years chairman of the Mauriee.ville West Co-operative Dairy Factory Co., one of the co-opera-tive concerns to be launched in the Dominion, while he also was chairman of the school committee. In 1886 he married Miss Anna Nielsen, and he continued to reside, in the Wairarapa till 1915, when he, iremovedi to Palmerston North. In addition to his widow, Mr Petersen leaves, an adult family of six sons and one daughter, the members being Messrs William, James, Ernest, and Arthur, all resident in Palmerston, Mr Oliver Petersen, t-f Miramar, Wellington, and Mrs W. , Whaley,. of, P'almerstojn. There are also 16 grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs Wallace, predeceased her father in 1908.
