SCHOOL RUGBY.
WELLINGTON DEFEAT HOEOWHENIJA; In view of the approaching primary schools Rugby quadrangular tournaments to be held during the coming term holidays, a try-out game was played between representatives of the primary schools of Wellington and Horowhenua on the Levin Domain on Saturday afternoon; when four quarter hour spells were played. A strong southerly wind swept across the ground which somewhat interfe-red with kicking, while the ball was greasy as a result of the rain which had fallen earlier in the day, but nevertheless both teams handled it fairly well. The Horowhenua 'boys appeared to be the heavier, particularly the forwards, who had the best of the scrum work. However, the backs, standing too close, made little use of any advantage in this direction, the ball passing along a straight line with the result that practically no ground was gained. In this respect Wellington were also very often at fault. The game was a fairly even one and both should do well
in the respective tourneys. T'he following is the personnel of the two teams that took the field:
Horowhenua (red and blue). —Fullback, Pitt \(Foxton); three-quarters, Mitchell (Waikanae), Parata (Waikanae), McGregor (Foxton); fiveeighths, Mildenhall (Manakau) and Howard (Levin); half, Lee (Levin); forwards, Aitken (Levin), S. Denton (Otaki), Percwhiti (Ohau), A. Denton (Otaki), Hippolyte (Foxton), Keedwell (Levin), Radford (Shannon); Devonshire (Foxton). Wellington (black). —Full-back Moors (island Bay), three-quarters, Waddley (Xewtown), Little (Khandallah), MeIvor (Clyde Quay); five-eighths, Walls (Eongotai), Burridge (Rongotai); half, Poynton (Island Bay); forwards, Sininis (Mt. Cook), Saviil (St. Brigadine), Brennan (St. Brigadine), Irons (Newtown), Chamberlain (Miramar Central), Martin (Kelburn), Heapy (Marist), MeLennan (Rongotai).
In the second quarter hour's play Xeilsen and Yuille (both of Levin) replaced Mildenhall and McGregor. The team in the third and fourth spells was the same as in the first.
During the game Kuhn (Terrace), florsf'all (Newtown) and Brown (Marist) replaced Moors, Brennan and MeLennaii.
The first spell opened with Wellington defending the western goal. Horowhenua at once se£ up an attack, and early in the spell, Mitchell intercepting a dribbling rush, rucked up the ball and beating the opposition was aide to register a try for Horowhenua, which wais unconverted. The remainder of the spell was played in Wellington's territory, but a sound defence prevented Horowhenua scoring.
On changing over Xeilsen auad Yuille replaced Mildenhall and McGregor in Hie irorowlienua team, but the change was not. to the team's advantage as Wellington at once became the aggressors. lOarly in the spell they had an unsuccessful shot at goal from a penalty. They continued the attack on the home team's line, the latter being' compelled to force. With the ball, at his toe Ileapy carried play back to Horowhenua's line, but :i penalty to tho latter enabled them to save. Wellington still pressed and with play near the line Walls picked up and crossed. Burridge failed to add the extra points. Shortly after a nice save was made for Horowhenua by a mark. The ball was returned finding the line. From the line out it was sent .back to Waddley who raced through to score a good try, thus placing his team in the lead. The try was unconverted.
In the third spell Ilorowhenua played the same team as in the first spell, while Wellington lunderwent several alterations. A dribbling rush by the Horowheuua, 'boys placed the visitors on the defensive and a force followed. A good chance for Ilorowhenua to equalise came when Mitchell got possession in front of the posts when he attempted to goal, from the field, instead of passing to Mildenhall, who had a good scoring chance. A good tussle took place on Wellington's line and after putting up a sound defence they got possession and by a passing movement among their backs cleared. The final spell saw Horowhenua try hard to at least make a draw of it. Twice in quick succession Mitchell made determined efforts to score, but lie was well collared on each occasion. The first time he had reached the line before he was brought down. The remainder of the spell was very evenly contested, the final scores being Wellington 6, Horowhenua 3. Mr I. Pardons very ably controlled the game.
, Wellington play in the Wairarapa— Wanganui —Manawatu quadrangle, and Horowhenua in that including also Taranaki, Rangitikei and the Hutt. It should be noted that on Saturday each team was playing under its own conditions, that is the Welling oll team had both an age (15) and weight (9.7) limit, while Horowhenua only had a weight limit, (9.7).
