World Honours Sought for New British Speed-boat
GAR WOOD’S SUPREMACY TO BE CHALLENGED. (British Official ’Wireless.) Received Friday, 7 p.m. • RUGBY, Aug. 3. Entirely new principles of speedboat construction have been introduced in Miss Britain HI., built secretly at Hythe. The boat will be shipped next week for America, where, on Lake St. Clair, Detroit, Mr. Hubert Scott Paine hopes next month to challenge Commodore Gar Wood’s Miss America X. for the British International Trophy. The new speed-hoat is built of steel and resembles in its fuselage the Schneider Trophy seaplane. The driver and mechanic sit in a small compartment. Secret speed trials realised 100 miles an hour. When at full speed , it rises well clear of the water, hut at rest it has only two inches clearance. The. boat cost £22,000. It is equipped with only one Napier engine, developing 1375 horsepower and has the lowest weight per horsepower of any similar craft ever produced.
