WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

LEVIN. The usual monthly meeting of the Ltjvin Women’s Institute was held in the Rest Rooms on Wednesday. The President (Mrs Thorpe) presided over a very large attendance, several visitors being present, amongst whom were Mrs Kelso, Dominion Organising Secretary, and Mrs Miles of the Stanway Institute. The meeting opened with the reading of the Aspirations, and routine business followed. In connection with the Conference called by the Levin Borough Council Mrs Spencer and Mrs Treen were chosen to represent the Institute. -The delegates for the forthcoming Group Rally to be held in Levin in February next are Mrs M. Ryder and Mrs Dalton. -Tt was decided to send a delegate to the Conference at last meeting, and Mrs Thorpe was elected , to go to Christchurch where the conference'is being held. A ; bracket of t\vo numbers, “O who wjH 6 } er the down so free,” and “I know a bank” were given by the •Music Circle and were very much appiieteikted. Mrs Thorpe read a very good report

of the Group Rally held at Tokomaru on July sth, contributed by Mrs Ha!]. After afternoon tea was dispensed, Mrs Miles, of the Stanway Institute, ■very ably gave a demonstration on the making of Thrift Rugs, which was very keenly enjoyed by all present. The meeting' welcomed Mrs Kelso with much pleasure, being greatly indebted to her for sparing some of her valuable time just now when Conference matters are. occupying so much thought. Mrs Kelso gave a very interesting talk on the aims of the Women’s Institutes, which were formed to improve rural life, and to teach women to become good citizens, “A man builds the house, but a woman, makes the home,” said the speaker A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Kelso and Mrs Miles, for ’ giving such interesting contributions to the afternoon’s programme. The hostesses for the afternoon \yere Mesdames M, Ryder, N. Ryder, H. Johnson and Miss Dunn. In the competition for “An Eggless Cake,” the results were: Mrs Spencer first, Mrs Thorpe second, Mrs Harris third. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy gathering , to a close.
