HOROWHENUA RIDING WORK.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Horowhenua County Engineer (Mr. J. T. M. Brewster) reported as follows for the past month, at the meeting of the Council on Saturday: — 1 Tokomara Riding. General maintenance has been car- 1 ried out in the riding. 1 A washout at the wing wall of Kara * Stream bridge, Otaura Road, has been < repaired, but further work of extend- : ing the wing wall of the bridge to a greater depth will have to be under- 1 taken. The metalling of Buckley Road towards the river has been carried out. Scrub has been cut back on Mangaore Road. Wirokino Riding. Willow protection work has been built into the Ohau River bank above the bridge on Muhunoa East Road. A wooden culvert on Hokio Sand Road collapsed and had to be replaced with concrete pipes. Maintenance metal has been put on Paiaka, Heatherlea East, Ohau West, Bruce, Buller and Farm Roads. Other general matters in the riding have received attention. Otaki Riding. General maintenance has been attended to in this riding. The grader has been over various district roads. The re-formation of Rahui Road from No. 1 Main Highway to racecourse corner is under way. Tenders have been invited for the supply of 250 cubic yards of metal to dumps on to the Waikawa Beach Road. Te Horo Riding. Betts’ Road has received a -light coat of metal. The Otaki Gorge Road from the overhead bridge to junction with No. 373 Main Highway has been scarified, graded and rolled and a light coat of metal spread for a running surface. A filling hs been put in on the Te Horo Beach Road which will improve the traffic way. Tenders has been invited for the supply of 250 cubic yards of beach shingle in dumps on to the Te Horo Beach Road.

A letter was forwarded to Mr. Styles asking him -‘to remove obstructions from a watercourse on his property adjoining No. 373 Main Highway. He has not fully complied with the request, and it will now be necessary to take further action. Main Highways. A motor lorry caused considerable damage to the hand-rail of the Otaki bridge, also to one of the suspension rods. The -woodwork has been icpaired, and the rod will be replaced as soon as opportunity offers. Riding Requirements. Cr. Whyte stated that about ten chains of road from the boardinghouse to the station at Tokomaru was in a potholed condition. The engineer stated that this would receive attention before the next meeting if work in the Otaki Gorge, due to slips, were finished. Cr. Whyte also asked for the clearing away from the subway of, earth which had been falling in owing to cattle going through there being now very little clearance for cars. Cr. Best asked that work on Pretoria Road be completed now that Buckley Road w T as done. He also stated that No. 3 bridge on Kingston Road was on the verge of collapse. Cream lorries were travelling there once or twice a week. Cr. ColquhOun congratulated the engineer on the river protection work carried out at Muhunoa East.

Cr. Catley asked for some metal to be placed on Soldiers’ Road. He stated that several matters bad been referred to the Councillors for tlie Wirokino riding, and would be reported on when finalised.

Cr. Jensen suggested that the Council endeavour to obtain Government relief in regard to Otaki Gorge Road upkeep, which was straining the Council’s finances. It was recognised, he said, that a good many outsiders were using that road. In reply to a question, the engineer stated that the damage to the Otaki bridge had been made good. The engineer’s report was received, and it was resolved that steps be taken to enforce the proper cleaning of the watercourse on Mr. Styles’ property at Te Horo.
