SEEKING BETTER FOOTBALL.
ATTEMPT TO CO-ORDINATE RUGBY LEAGUE AND AUSTRALIAN GAMES.
(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) ; SYDNEY, Wednesday.
A conference of football representatives of all the States will be held in Sydney shortly, to try to amalgamate 'codes of the Rugby League and Australian Rules football, with a view to evolving a national game which will embrace the best features of the respective codes and enable inter-State annual contests to be held. A distinctly national game is played mainly in the southern States, under the name of Australian Rules football. It originated in 'Melbourne in 1858, in a go-as-you-please match, which proved a great draw. It was not till 1906 that the central controlling body, the Australian National Football Council, was formed. At the first carnival, held in 1908, a team from New Zealand competed. In the past 40 years the game has made great progress, and the 1932 season was considered its best. In September it had its record attendance, nearly 70,000 people witnessing the grand final, Richmond v. Carlton, on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Australian game offers plenty of scope both for hand and footwork. The move that is now taking place will probably make it more like Rugby and less like Soccer.
