WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
GROUP MEETING AT TOKOMAEU. The second rally of tlio Manawhenua group of Women's Institutes .was held in the Tokomaru hall last week; the day being- beautifully fine. At about 11 o'clock, -when the first visitors began to arrive, the local residents began to wonder what was about to take place and by 2 o'clock it was quite apparent that something of importance concerning the Women's Institute was taking place, there being cars of all shapes and sizes outside the hall, also two buses. Mrs E. Titcombe, the Tokomaru president, opened the meeting after welcoming all the members, especially those from Ihakara, a newly-formed Institute. Mrs Barber was unanimously re-elected convener. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Kelso, of Ohau,' and Mrs Waring Taylor, of Shannon.
A discussion on the method of voting took-place, Mesdames Easton and Barber giving a definite explanation. The winners of the sugar bag competition was Mrs C, Voss, of Tokomaru W. 1., Mrs Sanderson, of Shannon, being second and Mrs Craw, of Linton, third. The .beautiful banner, the work of Mrs Sanderson, of Shannon, was therefore awarded to Tokomaru until next rally. The delegates from each institute were Mesdames Bryant and Gapper (Kimberley), Harris and Spencer (Levin), Miss Best and Mrs Koberstein (Koputaroa), Mesdames Bovis and Snelling (Shannon), Easton and Symons (Foxton), Misses E. Young and Cooksley (Opiki), Mies E. Young and Mrs T. Lynch (Linton), Mesdames Cheer and Webb (Tokomaru). After the business of the group had been finished, opportunity was taken by Mrs A. McGill, of Tokomaru, to make a presentation to Tokomaru's retiring president, Mrs E. Titcombe, who is leaving for her new home in Foxton early in the week. A delightful talk on India and Africa, was given by the Rev. Fotheringham, of Shannon. A very delectable afternoon tea wae served by the Tokomaru members most expeditiously. Three plays were presented during the afternoon by Linton, Tokomaru and Foxton Institutes. Those taking part were: Linton, Mesdames Harrison, Gretton, Terry, Nash, Lynch, Crawford, Miss I. Rix; Tokomaru, Mesdames Osman and Voss, Misses J. Boote, V. Voss, E. Titcombe, D. Fowler; Foxton, Mesdames Bobbie, Byne, Thomas, Misses M. Yorke, O. Yorke and U. Thompson. A delightful afternoon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. A competition for a box of chocolates was won by Miss C. Byder, of Levin. As a fitting conclusion to an eventful day a dance was held in the Tokomaru hall on Wednesday night. As usual with institute functions, there was a very good gathering and a very happy time was spent by all. It was announced during the evening that a competition for a peggy square quilt had been won by Mrs Hensman, of Shannon. The next group rally was arranged for the second Thursday in February to be held in Levin, Levin and Kimberley Institutes combining to run the function. The competition for the next meeting is to be any article made from four skeins of New Zealand wool, entries to be sent to Mrs Thorpe, of Queen Street, Levin, before October Ist.
