Shute Wins in Play-off

DEBAOLE FOR NOTED PLAYERS LONDON, July 8. In the British open golf championship Shute and Craig-Wood tied with scores of 292 and will replay over 30 holes on Saturday. Other scores are:—Sarazen, Diegcl and Easterbrook, 293; Dutra, 294; Padghan, Cotton, E. Whitcombe, Dudley and Mitchell, 295; Compston and E. Whircombe, 290; Havers, Horton, Smith and Kirkwood, 297; Tolley, McLean and Boomer, 298; Hagen and Eobertson, 301; Perry, 302; Duiley, 303; Somerville and Spark, 304; Cruickshank and Nolan, 305; Dunlap,-306; Twine, 307; Farrell, 311. For a long time Diegel and Sarazen ; headed the field with 293 and then came Craig-Wood, with a 75, and Shute, with his fourth consecutive 73, into the leading position. Shute had a great advantage at the last hole. His drives finished on the road, but a magnificent careful iron shot put him four yards from the pin. A putt for a three would have given him the championship, but the ball stopped at the brink of the hole. Even then, Easterbrook, playing behind, seemed to be still in the running to regain the title for England and had i a perfect round to the fourteenth hole where a seven proved his undoing. Craig-Wood and Shute are both aged thirty. They are both in the open at their first attempt, which no American has accomplished before. Seldom has there been such an exciting finish to the championship. A strong wind made play more difficult than on the previous days, but nobody expected such an upsettting of every forecast and anticipation. In the first place Hagen put himself out by taking 79 for the third round. He was unable to keep out of trouble, but even at the end of the third round nobody expected neither Shute or Craig-Wood to oust the more fancied aspirants, especially as Cotton, Easterbrook, Mitchell and Kirkwood, all with 216, headed the list; while eight others, including Dudley, Wood, Sarazen, Hagen and Tolley were within three strokes of them. The fourth and deciding round upset all calculations and proved a debacle for all the leaders. Hagen went from bad to worse with a card of 82. Mitchell, after the best season of consistency he has ever had, fell away to return a 79; Dudley a 78, Tolley and Cotton 79. Kirkwood spoilt his chances in the final round, taking CO o:i top of l:is 216.
