LOCAL BODY LOANS.
NO COMPULSORY CONVERSION.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday.
In a statement to-day, the ActingPrime Minister, Mr 'Coates, says attention Iras been drawn to press reports in various parts of the Dominion, apparently founded on statements made by the Waipara County Council, that it had been advised that the compulsory conversion of local body loans was likely to he enforced by the Government.
'Mr Coates desired to give these rumours an emphatic denial as the question of compulsory conversion has at no stage been considered by the Government. The present response to the appeal for conversion of local body loans is so gratifying in the short period which has elapsed since the Loans 'Board issued its circular on May 11th that it appears that the vast majority *>f local authorities are fully aware of the advantages to ibe gained by conversion.
