MARVEL OF MODERN WORLD PROVIDES THRILL.
"With tie active development of heavier than air and tinder water craft in modem times, has come many inventions for the safety of those who drive shem. Unfortunate accidents' have ibefallen submarines, and the brains of the world have tried to devise means of rescue for those trapped' in the dis : abled submarine lying helplessly at the bottom of the sea. In “The t>evil and the Beep”/the dramatic offering flop. Paramount at the Regent Theatre, there \is a submarine deliberately wrecked in collision by the insane commander. -And then the thrill of the triumph of modern brains is seen making it possible for the trapped survivors to escape, adding to the thrill and drama of the picture. Taken in association with experts from the department of the Navy, the actual scenes of the inside .of a submarine were built faithfully on the vast stages of the Paramount studios and then flooded. The men are under the same conditions as they would be at the bottom of the sea, excepting perhaps the depth would not be quite the same. Having shown you in detail the preparations of the men for their escape, and the men in the hatches awaiting the evening of the pressure of the sea above before releasing themselves, you are then taken to sea. . Scenes of the escape of men from a sunken suibmarin6 were taken at practice by a unit of the navy, and by the use 'of a special diving bell, which enabled the photographer to get the pictures of the men coming from the sub, and raising themselves by the buoy to the top. The combination of these two shots, the .studio built interiors of the sub. and the, diving bell shots of the drill combine to give picturegoers one of the most absorbing and thrilling episodes that have ever been seen in pictures. The players are Gary Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead, Charles Laughton the famous character actor from England, who from this, his first role, has made a name for himself, and Cary Grant.
