England Leads in Ryder Cup Golf
90ME NOTABLE SURPRISES A crowd of ten thousand people watched the Ryder Cup. The 36-hole foursomes resulted in Britain being in a much stronger position than was generally anticipated. America must win at least five of the eight singles in order to retain the trophy. The victory of Mitchell and Havers was due to Mitchell's magnificent approaches. Hagen and Sarazen were lucky to snatch a half. The Britishers were definitely superior through the green, but were weak in putting, especially Alliss, in missing a four-footer for a win on the last green. Hagen and Sarazen were involved in a remarkable landslide. Having won a two-hole lead, they lost five out of the next six holes, Sarazen missing a whole series of easily holeable putts. Alliss and Whitcombe were four up at the eighth in the second round, but then had a patch of trouble, and failed to win even from dormie 2. Mitchell and Havers proved a great combination, with long driving and accurate pitching. Their figures were 71 and 65 against the Americans' 77 and 66. Davies and Easterbrook finished the first round square. They fought till they were 2 up and 3 to play, and then only snatched victory on the last green. Padgham and Perry went under after holding a valuable lead in the middle of the second round.
