Maier Extends Crawford

AT BRITISH TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS ANDREWS BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND. LONDON, June 26. Champions of 28 nations are competing at the Wimbledon tournament, which opened in dull weather, with occasional sunshine. There was a great cosmopolitan crowd. J. R. Crawford had a gruelling match against the virile Spaniard, E. Maier, who is unsurpassed in his overhead work and volleys, and began splendidly by twice acing Crawford, and led *4 —1 in the first set. After this Crawford improved his length, and won the set 7 5. The tennis remained at a high level, and in the fifth set Maier led 4—2. Crawford, serving grimly, won the next game, and then withstood the Spaniard’s fierce, high-kicking service, and eventually won the set and j match. Maier played a kind of tennis of which he had previously not been believed capable. He harassed Crawford with deep drives on both wings and played with speed against which Cranford’s subtlety was unavailing. The picturesque Czechoslovakian giant, Roderick Menzel, with his fast service and strong forehand, elminated E. D. Andrews after a long match in which the Czech seemed almost on the point of collapse through exhaustion. A. C. Stedraan was the only New Zealander to survive the first round, and he accomplished a fine performance in a three hours’ battle with the versatile and experienced Oliff, who retired at 9.5 p.m., due to the failing light and the slipperiness of the court. Stedman’s passing shots were a feature of the match.
