RUGBY FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA UNION. MANY MATTERS DEALT WITH. 'The weekly meeting of the man- ; agement eomjnittee of the Horowhenua Rugby Union was held last evening there being present: Messrs W, C. Hannan (Chairman), A. j. Devonshire ( (Foxton Fire Brigade), M, Winiata (senior selector), W. Seymour (Kuku), Nepia Winiata (Wanderers), G. O. .■jßarber (Foxton F. 8.), J. W. Bishop (Athletic), A. Richards (Shannon), S. Hooper (Hui Mai), E. M. Ryder (Punahau) J. Casey (secretary), J: W. Rimmer . (treasurer), and I. D. Parsons (representing the Referees’ Association in the absence of Mr P. MeLeavey). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs M. G. McLean (Paraparaumu) and J. W. Procter (life member). SUSPENSIONS. Arising out of the incident which resulted, at the previous meeting, in C. Dome, of Athletic juniors, being suspended for a week for fighting in the match at Tokomaru, P. Jackson (Tokomaru captain) was stood down for one playing Saturday, on a similar charge. On Saturday the referee in the Pae-kakariki-Paraparaumu match ordered R. Cox, of the former team, off the field on the ground of deliberate tripping, and similarly dealt with D. Cluny, of the other team, but stated in his report that he thought that the latter player’s tripping was accidental. v Both players attended the meeting. Cox stated that his tripping had been unintentional; he went to collar another player high, and his foot got in the way. Cluny said an opponent made to go round him and Cluny went to collar him, but the other player went over his hip and over-balanced. Cox Was suspended for three playing Saturdays, the ' Committee regarding tripping as one -of the .most dangerous offences against the Rugby ■code. Cluny was suspended for the same period, this being carried as an amendment against a motion for a two weeks’ suspension. In the Otaki-Rahui match, Dick Bopata was ordered off. • The referee’s report stated that a Rahui player made a fair catch, which was marked; Ropata was standing about eight yards away, when he charged at the other player; this act could have been avoided. .

Ropata stated that he was trying to beat an opponent to the ball, and made an attempt to jump as he was watching the ball, and before he could stop he came down on the other player.

The Committee upheld the referee’s report and took the view that Kopata had had sufficient time to avoid the impact with the other player. The penalty imposed was suspension for one playing Saturday. , INCIDENTS. The report by the referee on the above game also stated that he had to stop it on another occasion and order the Otaki coach over the fence for criticism of the referee. The Otaki players, he added, were poor sports, in that they hooted at the conclusion of the game. RAHUI MATCH AWARDED TO OTAKI. The Otaki club forwarded a protest against Raimi’s win, on the ground that they had played E. Flanagan, who had not then received a transfer from the Otaki club.

The Chairman stated that the application for the transfer came to the last meeting of this Committee, hut it was then too late, as the first round was over. Rahui were therefore out of order in playing Flanagan. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Hooper, seconded hy Mr Barber, that the Otaki protest be upheld and the match awarded to them. REP. COLOURS.

With reference to the application for registration of the Horowhenua rep. colours as red and blue hoops, the N.Z. Union asked t q be supplied with a sample jersey. The secretary reported that this had been forwarded.

QUADRANGULAR TOURNEY

'The Horowhenua branch of the Educational Institute gratefully acknowledged the Union’s willingness to assist the schools’ quadrangular toumey, and welcomed Mr Procter as the Union’s representative on the controlling committee.' The tourney will take place on Saturday, August 19th, and the following Monday and Wednesday, two matches being played on each day. The teams will represent" the Taranaki, Rangitikei, Hutt and Horowhenua schools. RELATIONS WITH MANAWATU. In connection with the recent dissolution of the Combined Manawhenua Union, advice was received that it was desired to hold a further meeting, to arrange about the loan of £ISOO from the N.Z. Union; and it was suggested that the meeting follow the rep. match in Levin on July Bth. The Chairman complained of the delay that was being experienced at the "hands of the Palmerston interests in winding up the affairs of the old Union. What was termed the “washup” meeting had already been held. He added that the feeling which had resulted in the dissolution of the Combined Union had not come from this district. It was through the wish of Manawatu that that course had been instituted. When he went to the annual meeting of the N.Z. Union to place the proposal before it, he found that certain necessary preliminary steps had not been taken, and he had to do his best to have them, put in order; the sub-committee had "not seen

to them. He thought that the proposed wash-up meeting was unnecessary; but if Manawatu wanted it, it would give him an opportunity to speak his mind on the position. The £ISOO loan was for Manawatu. REFEREE ’iS ABSENCE. An explanation was received from Mr E. Cole, referee, of his absence on the occasion Foxton juniors were to havte. placed (PStnalbes fat Koputarpaj. 'plie ear in which he was travelling Shannon to Eevin had a breakdown, and,he was not able to obtain transport from Levin to Koputaroa. PROTEST FALLS THROUGH. Mr Casey reported that he had been advised that Pirates were entering a protest against Shannon juniors’ win, but the written protest had missed the mail. The position, ae explained to him, was that before the match both captains agreed that there should be no replacements of injured players; a" Shannon player was hurt before halftime, and retired; in the .second spell it was found that another man had come on to play for Shannon. The Chairman stated that the matter could not be dealt with in the absence of the written protest and a deposit. The time had now expired when these would be in order. It was necessary for a protest and deposit to be in the hands of the Union on the Tuesday evening following the match. ' MATCH AGAINST MANAWATU. Arrangements were made relative to the rep. match to be played against Manawatu on July Bth at Levin. The admission charges were fixed as follows: 1/6, ladies 1/-, stand 6d, cars 1/-. Mr M. Winiata was appointed manager of the Horowhenua team. A “curtain-raiser” will be played in two fifteen-minute spells by teams from the Levin District High School. / OTAKI JUNIORS v. PAEAPARAUMU This match originally set down to be played at Paraparaumu, on Saturday, will take place at Otaki, commencing at 1.30 p.m. UNION’S RULES. The Chairman' reported that the Union’s rules had been considered by the sub-committee set up for the purpose, and it had decided to accept the club ' contest rules en bloc. The rules could be forwarded to the clubs for discus- ; sion, and could eventually be brought * before the annual meeting of the Un- ‘ ion. As to the general rules, the sub- ■ committee had agreed that the vice-pre--5 sidents should be appointed from club : delegates; and that voting for the com- ’ mittee must be for the full number of members. ? It was resolved to forward draft eop--1 ies of the rules to the clubs. 3 FLAYERS’ DOMICILES 1 Further information was given by Mr ' Barber with reference to J. Poto, who had played for the Huia Club in the 3 Te Kawau Sub-Union, and regarding ■ whom the Foxton club had inquired 1 whether it could play him without ob--2 taining a transfer, on the ground that r he was a resident of Horowhenua. Poto, he said, was living well inside this Union’s boundary. 3 Mr Barber also stated that Gilmour, 1 who was living inside this boundary, * and who had played for Moutoa last 3 year and been raised to senior grade, i was playing for Te Kawau and that , sub-union had reinstated him to jun--1 ior grade. At the previous meeting, the Chairman had ruled that, in the event of Poto being a bona fide resident of the t Horowhenua district, he would be elig--1 ible to play in this district after the a expiry of 14 days from the time he i last played for the Huia club. The Chairman said the object of the - Suspension was to bring tPoto —and b similarly with Gilmour—before the Unt ion and ask him to show cause why 1 he should not be suspended for playing t outside its area. He moved that Poto and Gilmour be written to and asked £ to appear before the Union aecording- , ly; and that, failing their appearing, 1 the matter be referred to the Manawatu Union with a view to their suspension, and'also to the N.Z. Union, il MAORI-PAKEHA MATCH, t The Chairman recorded his congrat--3 ulations to the Maori and Pakeha i teams on the way in which they had assembled for their annual match, i played recently at Shannon. He also praised the manner in which the game had been played. Mr M. Winiata expressed his appreciation of the Chairman’s remarks, and - mentioned his satisfaction with the , number of reserve players that had 3 been in attendance. TE KAWAU MATCHES. Mr Barber said he had been asked - by the Te Kawau Sub-Union whether * there would be a match for them s against a Horowhenua junior team 3 this season. Two such matches were - played last year. The Chairman stated that an answer could not be given off hand, but the - matter might be considered at next r meeting. t Mr Devonshire suggested that a jun- , ior team from the two Foxton clubs ) play a Te Kawau team on a Wednes- - day. From among three referees whose names were submitted by the Horo--3 whenua Union, to control the match 1 against Manawatu at Levin on July 1 Bth, the Manawatu Union has selected Mr P. MeLeavey. The manager of the visiting team, which will travel 1 by train, will be Mr H. Bowler.
